Mindful of his urgent need for new clothes, and aware that he’d only narrowly escaped being dismissed from his job, Raven made sure that he left the office on time and went into town for a much-overdue shopping trip.

The town centre had changed a little over the years – the branch of Woolworth’s where he’d nicked his first CD had closed down and been taken over by Poundland – but the overall layout and feel was exactly as it had been during his teenage years. Marks and Spencer occupied the same spot as it always had, on the adjacent road of Newborough. He entered the store and went straight to the menswear department. He’d always bought his shirts, socks and underwear at M&S despite Lisa’s attempts to get him to broaden his horizons. His unadventurous approach to clothing had driven his wife to distraction, but secretly Raven was in no doubt why he so obstinately clung to his old habits. His mum had always bought his clothes for him at M&S, and continuing to shop there was one of the few ways he could keep her memory alive. It was tragic, really.

He scoured the racks of clothing, searching for the same shirts that he always bought. The shop had changed its range many times over the years, but Raven still sought out the same style every time. Slim fitting, hundred percent cotton, pure white. He scooped half a dozen off the shelf, added a generous helping of plain grey socks and piled some of his regular boxer shorts on top. His arms filled with his bounty, he went to the checkout desk and paid.

He was just about to leave the shop when he remembered. Returning to menswear, he selected a plain navy tie and checked out a second time. ‘You’re a big spender,’ quipped the woman on the till.

‘Don’t you believe it.’ Raven winked at her. ‘You won’t see me again for another twelve months.’

After dropping the BMW off in its usual place, he carried his purchases along the dark, narrow corridor of Quay Street, fumbling with his keys. He could have killed another fish supper but was determined not to show his face at the chippie again until at least the weekend. Friday night at the earliest. It would have to be frozen pizza instead.

Ahead of him, a car door slammed shut. He was surprised to see a red Porsche parked outside his house, blocking the street. A woman was standing in the light cast by a streetlamp, her strawberry blonde hair tumbling over her shoulders, her slim form silhouetted by the lamp.

A shiver went through him. It couldn’t be. It wasn’t possible.

‘Donna,’ he gasped. ‘Donna Craven.’ But it was his teenage voice that spoke out of his man’s body.

She stepped towards him and her features came fully into view, her hair backlit like a halo. ‘Hello, Tom. I heard you were back in town.’
